This assignment is divided into four components; writing skill, speaking skill, reading skill, listening skill each weighting 25%.

Section A:

The Writing Skills Assignment

Weightage: 25%

The students are expected to write on any Two topics out of the Five essay topics listed below.

1. 'Adult Education is one of the most conclusive methods to respond to contemporary change and to accommodate it'. Discuss with reference to the literacy rate of India. 2. 'Today, the high sales of popular consumer goods reflect the power of advertising and not the real needs of the society in which they are sold'. Discuss. 3. 'The system changes with better policies. Society changes with better values'. Discuss. 4. Should euthanasia be legalized? Discuss.

5. 'Genetic engineering is the practice of manipulating the genes of an organism'. Discuss the same by reflecting on its practical as well as ethical considerations.

Instructions:
Length of each essay should not be less than 1000 words.
Submission must be on time, as indicated in the SAIS.
Late submission will be awarded ZERO, unless extenuating circumstances are upheld by the EC Board.

Section B:

The Speaking Skills Assignment
Weightage: 25%

According to your Tutorial class, you will be divided into groups. As a group, you will be required to present a review of any movie which interests you. A power point presentation of the same should be prepared.

Length of each presentation should not be less than 15 minutes. Presentation must be on time, as indicated in the SAIS.
Late submission will be awarded ZERO, unless extenuating circumstances are upheld by the EC Board.

Section C:
Weightage: 25%

The Reading Skills Assignment

You must inculcate the habit of reading a newspaper daily.
You are required to pick up any four editorial articles which interested you from a leading English newspaper/ magazine. After reading the article, write a summary of the central idea as mentioned in the article and critically analyze the same. Present your article in the class

Length of each review should not be less than 500 words.
Submission must be on time, as indicated in the SAIS.
Late submission will be awarded ZERO, unless extenuating circumstances are upheld by the EC Board

Section D:
Weightage: 25%
The Listening Skills Assignment
For this assignment, you will (1) keep a log of your listening habits and others’ habits; (2) attempt to make personal changes in your listening and record them in your log and (3) write a paper about your experiences.

Phase I: For five days, keep a listening log.
For two weeks monitor and record your listening behavior.
After your interaction with others (one-on-one, group, over phone, with family, friend), take notes about your listening behaviors, as well as the behavior of others. Focus on the area :

What types of listening are you doing (e.g. appreciative, comprehensive). What obstacles to effective listening are you experiencing (e.g. preoccupation, lack of effort). What type of effective listening strategies are you using (e.g. perspective taking, paraphrasing, controlling obstacles). What are the outcomes of your listening habits?

Identify a ‘good’ and ‘bad’ listener and log their behaviors, as well as how their behavior affected your interaction with them.

Phase II: Change your listening habits for the better.
After you self-monitor and record your listening habits for two weeks, reflect on what listening habits and obstacles you might be able to improve. Spend two weeks making conscious efforts to change your behavior.
